My first experiences with fake songs from fake musicians in real movies and TV shows started back with Zack Attack and California Dreams. Of course those songwriters were actually shooting to write credible teen pop songs...years later, I shudder. Then I thought it must be a good time to write a song that's supposed to suck and mock itself. So here's to celebrating the great fake songwriters and real performances that have graced the big and small screen over the years....see Top 9 below. 1. Werewolf Bar Mitzvah - Tracy Jordan in 30 Rock. Boys becoming men, men becoming wolves.
2. Springtime for Hitler - The Producers. Springtime for Hitler taken out of context seems a little more inappropriate and makes a little less sense but this movie really put Mel Brooks on the map...plus I really like the dancer done up as a pretzel.
3. Dayman Nightman - It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. It evolved from the unnerving little tune, Nightman, into something much much greater.
4. Say No More, Mon Amour - Rex Manning in Empire Records. Oh Rexy, you're so sexy. I hadn't realized they actually shot a full-length video for this. Say No More, Mon Amour gave us a template for botched washed-up pop-star comebacks.
5. Scotty Doesn't Know - Eurotrip. How they got Matt Damon to cameo in a movie as terrible as Eurotrip, I do not know - but the movie really peaked here in a loving song about Scotty's girl's fling on the side.
6. Lazy Scranton - Michael & Dwight from The Office. Lazy Sunday, but more awkward and more beet farmers.
7. I'm Tired - Lily Von Schtupp in Blazing Saddles. The Bavarian bombshell herself in an Old West stageshow. Madeline Kahn was one of the best.
8. Eat Me (The Thanksgiving Song) - Adams Family Values. Ahhhh summer camp.
9. Put Your Mind To It - Hot Sundae in Saved by the Bell. Hot Sundae - Kelly, Jesse and Lisa's foray into girl group fame - is unfortunately not known for their musical talents, but for Jesse being in the throes of caffeine pill addiction during its heyday (which may not have even lasted 15 minutes). Regardless, the message was positive, the moves were bumpin' and the hair was big.
